In June 2013, we ran our first ever Campsite Artists Retreat. It was funded by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation and took place on Treverven Campsite in Cornwall.
The idea of the retreat was to offer artists
some time away from what became known as the 'hamster wheel' of making work, and to encourage a week of thinking about and
working on new material for small spaces.
Twenty three artists came with us and camped for a week, in what turned out
to be possibly the sunniest week
Cornwall had ever seen.
The week included informal sharings, impromptu workshops, coastal walks, nighttime tent concerts and the occasional ice cream.
"I was hoping for space. Which it gave me, in beautiful arm and lungfuls."
"I consider myself to have been set free from any sense of competition...I found within myself a championing of other people arising which felt sane and healthy and vital."
"I think it was important and exciting to be on the campsite with people that I didn't know as this allowed me to be myself, independent and encouraged me to develop new artistic relationships."
